Governance

StandBy Support After Suicide is dedicated to supporting people and communities across Australia bereaved or impacted by suicide.

StandBy is a program of Youturn Limited and operates nationally by partnering with local organisations, engaging their expertise within the community to deliver the most effective and culturally suitable support for each individual circumstance. Locally tailored community workshops and education programs are provided to increase awareness of suicide and suicide bereavement to help enable communities to support one another.

Based on the Sunshine Coast Qld, Youturn is a national, not-for-profit which delivers Health and Community Services to young and vulnerable people of all ages across Australia. Trusted to deliver safe, inclusive, and supportive programs, Youturn ensures that those they support, can have access to secure and affordable housing, and enjoy optimal mental well-being, allowing them to thrive and live a healthy meaningful life.

In the past year Youturn provided support to over 19,170* individuals through a diverse range of programs including homelessness, child safety, mental health, and suicide prevention.  Learn more here.

Service provision

StandBy currently receives annual funding to provide support to people bereaved or impacted by suicide, a population who may be at greater risk of suicide.

Youturn (StandBy Support After Suicide program) receives funding from the Commonwealth Government (Department of Health, Disability and Ageing) and participating States and Territory governments under the National Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Agreement (NMHSPA), supporting Bilateral Agreements and the National Suicide Prevention Leadership Support Program (NSPLSP).

The following States and Territory participate in the bilateral agreements for postvention: Northern Territory (NT), Queensland (QLD), New South Wales (NSW), and Victoria (VIC). The NMHSPA funding grant and the NSPLSP funding grants are issued through a contractual agreement between the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing and Youturn.

Program Strategy

Standby strategic plan

Our Program Strategy has been developed through input and insights from StandBy’s Lived Experience Advisory Group, a sample of representatives from StandBy service provision sites and the StandBy National Office team. The plan is also informed by a review of leading evidence, policy documents and sector trends relating to suicide postvention.

In the process of developing this plan, we recognise the critical importance of a broad range of perspectives in shaping the continued delivery and growth of StandBy across Australia. Moving forward, StandBy is committed to fostering joint ownership of the Program Strategy as we are ‘all in this together’.
