The ‘NT’ or the Northern Territory is 1.421 million km² with less than half a million people living here. To give some scope it’s twice the size of California but California has nearly 50 million people. That is 0.06% of California’s population in twice the space.
This means travelling vast distances at times to respond to a request for support or training. This transportation has involved planes small and large, lifting off from red dirt airstrips in remote islands and communities, long distance by vehicle and occasionally on some rough roads and even travel by boat.
We now have trained across the NT support team members in Darwin, Katherine, Tennant Creek and Alice Springs. In the NT StandBy partners with Thirilli and works alongside the National Indigenous Postvention service where we have advocates in Darwin and Alice Springs. StandBy also conducts training across the region to support those who support the bereaved. We are ever mindful that our small population is highly impacted by every loss, given the size of many of our communities. Many people know someone impacted by suicide and so, support is so important to the entirety of our community.
