StandBy Peer Support

What is peer support?

Peer support within StandBy links you with a Lived Experience Peer Worker (Peer Worker) who has also experienced a significant loss of someone to suicide. Peer Workers use their own experiences of suicide loss and grief to help others within StandBy Support. These workers have unique roles because they understand firsthand what it feels like to endure such difficult times. They use their personal experiences to offer distinctive support and perspectives. They are guided by specific values and principles, which help them provide compassionate and practical assistance in various roles and activities.

Based on shared experiences, this connection allows for more profound empathy, understanding, and support. Peer workers provide a supportive, respectful, and non-judgmental environment to help individuals navigate their grief.

How does someone access StandBy peer support?

To access StandBy peer support, individuals who have been bereaved by suicide and have received initial support from the StandBy Support Team can express their interest in ongoing peer support. This connection is facilitated by the StandBy Coordinator, who will introduce the individual to a trained Peer Worker and is a part of the support on StandBy’s behalf. No time limit on a person’s grief is required; you can be bereaved for two months or 20 years – the only requirement is your readiness. Individuals can also reach out to their local team member to discuss the availability of peer support by calling 1300 727 247. Peer support is currently available in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland and the Northern Territory.

Peer workers at StandBy engage with participants through various methods to provide comprehensive support. They can offer personalised one-on-one sessions tailored to individual needs, delivered face-to-face, over the phone or online or facilitate discussions and provide support in small groups within a close-knot setting, if required. Additionally, peer workers can also provide sessions for larger audiences, such as community or school groups, and participate in community events to offer support within broader context.

StandBy peer support sessions can be face-to-face, over the phone, or online. The frequency and duration of support are tailored to the individual’s needs. Find out more information on how to access these services through your local StandBy team on 1300 727 247.

How can people get the most out of peer support?

To fully benefit from peer support, participants are encouraged to be self compassionate, understanding that no individual’s experience is the same and to approach their healing process without judgement. Be open and honest, be comfortable to communicate needs and take advantage of the additional resources provided from the peer worker.
